The moment you submit your transcript to a German university or uni-assist, your CGPA gets converted into the German grading system automatically. And if you do not know what that conversion looks like before you apply, you could be walking into your application completely unprepared for how your grade appears on the other side.

This article covers two things. How the conversion actually works and what to do in your application documents when the result is not flattering.

The Two Grading Systems Side by Side

Nigeria uses a 5.0 CGPA scale. Germany uses a 1.0 to 4.0 scale where 1.0 is the best possible grade and 4.0 is the minimum pass. That inversion is the first thing that trips Nigerian applicants up. In Nigeria a higher number means better performance. In Germany it is the opposite.

Here is how Nigerian degree classifications sit on that scale before any conversion:

• First Class: 4.50 to 5.00

• Second Class Upper: 3.50 to 4.49

• Second Class Lower: 2.40 to 3.49

• Third Class: 1.50 to 2.39

• Pass: 1.00 to 1.49

How the Conversion Works

German universities and uni-assist utilise a formula known as the Modified Bavarian Formula to convert foreign grades into the German grading scale. The formula looks like this:

German Grade = 1 + 3 x (Nmax - Nd) / (Nmax - Nmin)

Where:

• Nmax is the maximum possible grade in your system which is 5.0 for Nigeria

• Nmin is the minimum passing grade in your system. For most Nigerian universities this sits between 1.0 and 1.5 depending on the institution. Uni-assist may apply a different Nmin based on your specific school, which can shift your result slightly

• Nd is your actual CGPA

Here is what that looks like for real Nigerian grades using 1.0 as Nmin. If your university uses a higher minimum pass mark, your converted grade may differ slightly from these figures:

• A CGPA of 4.7 (First Class) converts to approximately 1.2 in Germany, which is excellent

• A CGPA of 3.5 (Second Class Upper) converts to approximately 2.1 in Germany, which is good

• A CGPA of 2.8 (Second Class Lower) converts to approximately 2.7 in Germany, which is satisfactory

• A CGPA of 2.4 (Third Class) converts to approximately 3.0 in Germany, which is a bare pass

Most German Master's programmes require a converted grade of 2.5 or better. Some accept up to 3.0 depending on the programme and university. What This Means If Your Grade Converts Poorly

A converted grade of 2.8 or 3.0 does not automatically disqualify you. What it does mean is that your application documents, specifically your Motivationsschreiben, need to do more work than they would for someone with a 1.5 converted grade.

This is where most Nigerian applicants with lower grades make a critical mistake. They either ignore the grade entirely and hope nobody notices, or they apologise for it in a way that draws even more attention to it. Neither approach works.

How to Address a Low Converted Grade in Your Motivationsschreiben

The right approach is to acknowledge it briefly, contextualise it honestly, and move forward. Here is what that looks like in practice:

• Acknowledge it in one sentence. Do not pretend the grade is not there. The admissions officer can see it.

• Redirect to evidence of ability. Your grade is one data point. Your project work, your professional experience, your results in relevant coursework, and what you have done since graduating are also data points. Use them.

• Never apologise for it. Apology language signals to the reader that you do not believe in your own application. State the facts, provide the context, and move on confidently.

One thing that strengthens a low grade explanation significantly is showing upward trajectory. If your early years pulled your CGPA down but your final year results were strong, say that explicitly. German admissions officers respond well to evidence that a candidate learned from difficulty and improved.

What About Third Class Degrees

A Third Class degree converts to around 3.0 on the German scale which sits at the edge of what most universities will consider. It does not close every door but it does mean you need to be more strategic about which programmes you apply to and significantly more deliberate about how you write your application documents.

Some programmes at Fachhochschulen, which are German universities of applied sciences, are more flexible on grade requirements than research universities. If your converted grade is borderline, it is worth researching both types of institutions before you decide where to apply. The DAAD programme database is the most reliable place to search for English taught programmes in Germany and filter by admission requirements.

The Grade Is Not the Whole Story

German universities receive applications from all over the world. They understand that a 2.8 CGPA from a Nigerian university during a period of repeated ASUU strikes is not the same as a 2.8 CGPA from an institution with uninterrupted academic calendars. What they need is for you to help them understand that context. Your documents are where that conversation happens.
