Academic Integrity

The commitment to upholding ethical standards, honesty, and rigor in all aspects of research, teaching, and academic work.

What is Academic Integrity?

Academic integrity is the foundational moral code of academia. It encompasses honesty in reporting data, accurately attributing ideas, resisting pressures to fabricate or falsify results, disclosing conflicts of interest, and conducting peer review fairly. It ensures that the knowledge produced by researchers is trustworthy and reliable.

Why Academic Integrity Matters

The entire scientific enterprise relies on trust. Without academic integrity, research findings cannot be relied upon to inform policy, medical treatments, or social interventions, ultimately harming society.

Example

A researcher discovers a coding error in their statistical analysis that weakens their previously significant findings, and, guided by academic integrity, voluntarily submits a correction to the journal rather than hiding the mistake.

Common Mistakes

  • Engaging in 'p-hacking' or 'HARKing' (Hypothesizing After Results are Known) to make findings appear more robust than they are, mistakenly believing this doesn't violate integrity if the data itself wasn't faked.
  • Adding guest authors to a paper who did not meaningfully contribute to the research out of a sense of obligation or to boost the paper's prestige.
  • Selectively reporting only the experiments that 'worked' and hiding those that failed to support the hypothesis.
