Conceptual Framework

A visual or written model that maps out the key concepts, variables, and assumed relationships involved in a specific study.

What is Conceptual Framework?

A conceptual framework is a researcher's own synthesis of the literature and theory as it applies strictly to their research problem. It defines the specific variables to be studied and hypothesizes how they interact. It is narrower and more specific to the study at hand than a broad theoretical framework.

Why Conceptual Framework Matters

It forces the researcher to explicitly articulate their logic, ensuring all necessary variables are measured and providing a clear structure for organizing the data analysis and discussion of findings.

Example

A visual diagram showing 'Teacher Training' (independent variable) leading to 'Increased Teacher Confidence' (mediating variable), which in turn leads to 'Higher Student Achievement' (dependent variable), with 'School Funding' as a moderating variable.

Common Mistakes

  • Creating a framework that includes concepts the researcher does not actually intend to measure or analyze.
  • Failing to clearly define the arrows or relationships between the concepts in the framework.
