Content Validity

The extent to which a measure represents all facets of a given construct.

What is Content Validity?

Content validity assesses whether a test or assessment covers the entire domain of the subject it intends to measure. It requires a systematic examination of the test content to ensure it does not omit major aspects of the theoretical domain and does not include irrelevant aspects.

Why Content Validity Matters

If a measure lacks content validity, it only captures a slice of the phenomenon, leading to incomplete or skewed conclusions.

Example

A final exam for an algebra class has high content validity if it includes questions on linear equations, quadratics, and polynomials in proportion to how much time was spent on each in class.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing it with construct validity; content validity is usually evaluated by subject matter experts rather than statistical tests.
  • Testing only the easiest-to-measure aspects of a complex construct.
