Research Methodology
Convenience Sampling
A type of non-probability sampling that involves the sample being drawn from that part of the population that is close to hand.
What is Convenience Sampling?
Convenience sampling relies on data collection from population members who are conveniently available to participate in the study. No random selection is involved.
Why Convenience Sampling Matters
It is the easiest, cheapest, and least time-consuming method, making it useful for pilot testing or generating hypotheses, despite its severe limitations in representativeness.
Example
A psychology professor asks students in their 'Intro to Psych' class to complete a survey for course credit.
Common Mistakes
- Generalizing findings from a convenience sample to the broader population.
- Underestimating the severe selection bias inherent in who happens to be available.
