Research Methodology
Dependent Variable
The outcome or response variable that is expected to change as a result of variations in the independent variable.
What is Dependent Variable?
The dependent variable (DV) is the presumed effect, outcome, or criterion in a study. Its values are theorized to depend on the values of one or more independent variables.
Why Dependent Variable Matters
The dependent variable represents the primary phenomenon the researcher is trying to explain, predict, or influence.
Example
In a clinical trial for a blood pressure medication, the patients' measured blood pressure after treatment is the dependent variable.
Common Mistakes
- Using a dependent variable that is too broadly defined or poorly measured, reducing the study's ability to detect actual effects.
- Confusing the dependent variable with the independent variable in cross-sectional, correlational studies where temporal precedence is unclear.
