Research Methodology

Inductive Approach

A bottom-up research approach that builds new theories or generalizations from specific empirical observations.

What is Inductive Approach?

The inductive approach begins with the collection of detailed data (often qualitative) without preconceived hypotheses. The researcher analyzes this data to identify patterns, themes, and regularities, eventually building up to broader generalizations and new theoretical frameworks. It moves from the specific to the general.

Why Inductive Approach Matters

Induction is crucial for theory generation, exploratory research, and understanding phenomena in contexts where existing theories fall short or do not apply.

Example

A researcher conducts open-ended interviews with undocumented immigrants about their healthcare experiences. By analyzing the transcripts, they identify a recurring pattern of 'strategic invisibility,' which they then develop into a new conceptual model of healthcare access.

Common Mistakes

  • Claiming inductive findings prove a universal law, rather than recognizing them as context-bound theories requiring further testing.
  • Unconsciously forcing inductive data to fit the researcher's prior biases or pre-existing theories, rather than letting themes emerge from the data.
