Interpretivism

A research paradigm focused on understanding the subjective meanings and experiences of individuals within their social contexts.

What is Interpretivism?

Interpretivism emerged as a critique of positivism in the social sciences. It assumes a relativist ontology (multiple realities exist) and a subjectivist epistemology (knowledge is co-created by the researcher and participant). Interpretivist researchers seek deep, contextualized understanding of how people make sense of their world, rather than seeking universal laws or causal relationships.

Why Interpretivism Matters

Interpretivism justifies the use of qualitative methods like ethnography, phenomenology, and in-depth interviewing. It highlights the importance of context, culture, and individual agency in shaping human behavior.

Example

A researcher studying nurses' experiences of compassion fatigue by conducting unstructured, deep-dive interviews and analyzing their narratives is using an interpretivist approach to capture nuanced, lived realities.

Common Mistakes

  • Evaluating interpretivist research using positivist criteria like statistical generalizability or strict replicability.
  • Treating participants' subjective accounts as objective facts about the external world rather than constructed meanings.
