Statistics
Mode
The value that occurs most frequently in a dataset.
What is Mode?
The mode is a measure of central tendency representing the most common observation. A dataset can have one mode, two modes, multiple modes, or no mode at all if all values are unique.
Why Mode Matters
The mode is the only measure of central tendency that can be used for nominal or categorical data where values cannot be ordered or averaged.
Example
In a survey asking participants their favorite color, if 'blue' is chosen by the largest number of respondents, 'blue' is the mode.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming a bimodal distribution simply means two values tied for the absolute highest frequency, rather than recognizing it often indicates two distinct sub-populations.
- Trying to use the mode for continuous variables measured to many decimal places, where every value might be unique.
