Qualitative Coding

The broad analytical process of categorizing and tagging qualitative data to identify patterns, concepts, and meaning.

What is Qualitative Coding?

Qualitative coding encompasses various techniques (e.g., descriptive coding, in vivo coding, emotion coding) used to break down non-numeric data into manageable segments. It is an iterative process of identifying what the data is about and theoretically interpreting it, moving from concrete descriptions to abstract conceptualizations.

Why Qualitative Coding Matters

It is the primary mechanism through which qualitative researchers achieve rigor, traceability, and transparency. Systematic qualitative coding allows other scholars to understand exactly how the researcher moved from raw transcripts to final conclusions.

Example

A sociologist studying urban gentrification uses qualitative coding on field notes, tagging instances of 'community displacement,' 'rent hikes,' and 'loss of cultural markers' to structure their subsequent analysis.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating coding as a purely mechanical task of sorting data, rather than an active, interpretive analytical process.
  • Failing to keep a codebook or audit trail, making it impossible to explain or justify how codes evolved over the course of the research.
