Research Objective
A specific, measurable action that the researcher intends to take to answer the research question.
What is Research Objective?
Research objectives outline the concrete steps or goals of the study. They translate the overarching research question into specific operational tasks. Objectives usually begin with action verbs (e.g., to identify, to measure, to compare, to evaluate) and delineate exactly what the study will accomplish.
Why Research Objective Matters
Objectives provide a roadmap for executing the research. They help the researcher stay focused and provide criteria by which the success and completeness of the study can be judged.
Example
Objective 1: To measure the baseline level of financial literacy among first-generation college students. Objective 2: To compare the effectiveness of online versus in-person financial literacy workshops.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing research objectives (what the study will do) with research outcomes (what the study might discover or recommend).
- Setting vague or unmeasurable objectives that make it impossible to know if they were achieved.
