Research Methodology

Research Problem

A clear, specific issue, contradiction, or gap in knowledge that a research project aims to address.

What is Research Problem?

The research problem is the fundamental catalyst for the study. It defines the 'what' and 'why' of the research, establishing that a real issue exists in the field (theoretical or practical) that requires systematic investigation. A strong research problem is actionable, researchable, and clearly situated within existing literature.

Why Research Problem Matters

Without a clearly defined problem, research becomes aimless data collection. The problem statement dictates the research questions, methodology, and ultimately the relevance of the entire study.

Example

Despite the widespread adoption of AI grading tools in higher education, there is a lack of evidence regarding their impact on student motivation and trust in the feedback process.

Common Mistakes

  • Defining the problem too broadly (e.g., 'climate change is bad') making it impossible to investigate in a single study.
  • Framing a lack of prior research as the problem itself, rather than explaining why that lack of research actually matters.
